Miriams House, is a 15 bedroom converted convent located in Culver City, California. It is a recovery home for mothers and a refuge for children to escape chaos and instability. The yearlong program nurtures the individual needs of both mother and child while fostering the healing process of fractured families. It is not a place for temporary shelter, though we provide food, clothing and safety. Rather it is about mothers developing the life-long skills, including parenting and occupational therapy, to lead healthy, meaningful lives free from the confines of poverty and addiction.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Clients commit to a comprehensive agenda encompassing recovery, parenting, life-skills and occupational therapy. Structured around a yearlong curriculum, clients move through a four-phase program with incremental expectations and responsibilities. Residency is contingent on maintaining continuous sobriety, participation in a 12-step recovery program, enrollment in parenting classes, and actively striving toward self-sufficiency and employment during the later phases.
On a daily basis clients participate in a combination of in-house activities and programs offered by partner organizations. Onsite programs offered include: weekly individual goal assessment and case management, yoga and meditation, 12-step meetings, seminars, and childcare.
Miriams House also collaborates with other non-profit organizations to hold onsite workshops. Examples include:
Clients are also connected to local community resources for healthcare, job skills training, and other ancillary services. All residents living at Miriams House attend a 10-week parenting class sponsored by CLARE in addition to an employment course offered by the Chrysalis organization.
